Katrina Nelson
LMFT
My name is Katrina Nelson, and I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) in Utah, as well as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapy Associate in Texas. I hold a master's degree in marriage and family therapy from Brigham Young University. Throughout my practice, I have worked extensively with individuals and couples dealing with various challenges, including issues related to sexual desire, arousal, orgasm, pain, sexual trauma, and out-of-control sexual behavior or addiction. Additionally, I have significant experience addressing concerns such as anxiety, depression, trauma, betrayal, communication difficulties, perfectionism, family of origin issues, and attachment.

In my therapeutic work, I draw upon various approaches based on the unique needs of each client. I have received specialized training in Emotionally Focused Therapy (a research-backed couple's therapy approach) and Lifespan Integration (a trauma therapy modality). I also incorporate Internal Family Systems (IFS), solution-focused therapy, the Sexual Attentiveness and Accountability Model (SAAM), and mindfulness-based interventions.

I strongly believe in the importance of recognizing each client's uniqueness and tailoring therapy to their specific needs and strengths. Research consistently shows that a strong therapeutic relationship is the most crucial factor in successful therapy outcomes. Therefore, I prioritize active listening, being fully present, and fostering a sense of connection with my clients.

One of the most fulfilling aspects of being a therapist is witnessing clients as they embark on new experiences that shift their self-perception and transform their relationships. I firmly believe in the power of acceptance for life's difficulties, and I also hold the belief that healing and connection can lead to thriving and joy. Through teletherapy, I am able to serve clients located in both Utah and Texas.

Expertise
I specialize in working with adults who are feeling stuck and are ready to delve into the root of their issues by exploring new approaches. I find great value in utilizing experiential techniques and mindfulness to facilitate personal growth. Additionally, I take a holistic approach to mental health, considering factors such as physical well-being, social connections, and spending time in nature that can impact overall well-being. I believe that many of our challenging habits are actually adaptive coping mechanisms, which may require compassionate updating and redirection.

A significant portion of my client base consists of individuals who belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. These clients appreciate having a therapist who understands their belief system and values. I provide a safe and understanding space for clients who may be grappling with their faith, navigating a faith journey, or experiencing a transition without judgment. I am familiar with the nuances of the church context and understand the complexities of both remaining within or leaving the church community.
